The Military Hummer
The primariy user of the HMMWV is the US army where it is the vehicular backbone of the U.S. forces, the military HMMWV is also being used by a large number of other militaries around the world. It is therefore possible to find various international version of the traditional U.S. military Humvee.
Swiss versions of the military hummer
The Swiss version of the military hummer, formally know as the MOWAG Eagle, is available with varying levels of armour and indented for border patrolling, police missions, reconnaissance surveillance, liaison and escort. The latest version uses a different chassi than the HMMWV, the Duro III chassi and is NBC-tight.
The Israeli hummer
Armoured versions of the military hummer has been developed by Israeli owned vehicle manufacturer Plasan. There is for instance the M1114GR and M1118GR used by Greece (assembled by Greece ELBO) and the HMMWV Armored Protection Kit used by the Portugese Army. There is also a special kit available only to the Israeli defence forces.
The Polish military hummer
The Polish Land Forces currently operate over 200 different hummer variants, including a number of undisclosed variants operated by the special forces. The HMMWV or Hummer is a favorite type of land transportation for the 18th Airborne Battalion. Among the many different polish version you will find a hummer designed for container transport, as well as other with more offensive capabilities such as a hummer with a UKM-2000P 7.62mm general purpose machine gun or a NSW-B 12.7mm heavy machine gun mounted of a rotale mount.
Bulgarian versions of the military hummer
Just like Poland, Bulgaria have choose to outfit some of their hummers with machine guns. To simplify maintenance, Bulgaria uses the PKS machine gun a Soviet design heavy machine gun developed from the original Kalashnikov.
The Turkish Hummer
The Otokar Cobra is a lightly armed version of the military hummer using components from the U.S. military hummer. It does however differ from most other military hummer variants due to its amphibious capabilities in combat. Different variants of the Otokar Cobra are also used as anti-tank vehicles, armoured personal carriers, armoured command posts, ground surveillance radar vehicles, reconnaissance vehicles, forward observation vehicles, ground surveillance radar vehicles, and armoured ambulance.
The monocoque (structural skin / stressed skin) steel v-hull of the Otokar cobra protects the presonnel from anything ranging from small arms fire to shrapnel from artillery and anti tank mines as well as most IEDs. For added security, the front wheel arches have been modified to be blown away to free blast pockets. Some versions of the Cobra can provide 4- 11 persons with full armor protection.
Some of the Otokar Cobras are turreted for 12.7 mm machine gun and 20 mm anti-tank missiles (including Spike missiles and surface-to-air missiles).
