Retractable Awnings 101

By admin | November 7, 2009

Retractable awnings are simple structures that generally attach to your home in order to provide additional shade to your patio area. Manufacturers of retractable awnings make advanced awnings which now come in plenty of colors and patterns. Whats more, motorized awnings allow you to control your awning by a small remote control.

Retractable awnings like this can be opened and closed with a simple remote control device. Because they are powered with an electrical engine, you don’t have to manually crank open the awning every time. Because awnings come in many sizes, you can usually find the right model to provide shade for your outside living area.

On the other hand, manually powered awnings do the same job as a motorized awning, and will save you some money in the meantime. How? These awnings cost less to manufacture, and because they don’t have a motor, they cost less to the customer. Of course that means more work for the homeowner, who then has to open and close the awning with a hand cran. But if you don’t think you will pull in the awning on a regular basis, this may be the way to go for you.

Motorized retractable awnings are available at stores like Wal-Mart, Costco and Lowes. While the price is usually good at these retailers, your choice of color and pattern are usually reduced. A better option if you are trying to find something specific is to find an awning dealer, or even deal direct with the manufacturer.

When shopping for a custom retractable awning, there are a couple of names that are well known for their product. The name that is the most well known is the Sunsetter brand, with Sunbrella and Durasol being two other well known names. All of these manufacturers offer quality awnings at a fair price. Variety is the name of the game with these manufacturers, as they can provide you several options as far as colors and patterns.

There are several reasons to make that patio a cooler place to sit with your family. A motorized Durasol awning may be your ticket to a more enjoyable patio area. At the same time, you can beautify your deck with the pattern or color that matches your house.
