Which physical skill is more important: strength or speed? When it comes to pitching a baseball, speed wins. No, strength training is not required to gain speed, either. First, the mind has to understand pitching mechanics, then the body has to practice them - so that executing proper position and form is as natural as slipping a hand into a batting glove. Since the body and not the arm controls speed, once a player learns the proper body mechanics, everything else falls right into place.

What are some things to think about that will encourage a pitcher to gain velocity through pitching mechanics instead of attempting to increase strength? Don’t do weight training, throw heavy balls, or focus on the long toss. Remember, this will only make the arm stronger, not increase speed. In fact, these are sure ways to simply increase chance of injury, so it is doubly important to avoid them. Neither are drills or other excessively repetitive exercises helpful.

Should the pitcher, then, instead do the complete opposite and simply practice by playing “catch” or doing anything less than game intensity pitching? Definitely not.  Just because the pitcher should be concentrating on training his whole body to use proper pitching mechanics - instead of focusing on his arm through tunnel vision - doesn’t mean his practice on the whole should be any less intense.

Keep the body under control by eliminating unnecessary and speed-decreasing movements. Don’t rotate your trunk or hips. Don’t step to the side before lifting your leg or lift your leg too high. Do have a longer stride, however, to put you closer to the plate and improve your overall control. While position is important, don’t obsess over “staying tall”, as this can actually shorten your stride. Don’t forget: In baseball, speed outranks strength, and speed is gained not through strength and pitching drills, but through mechanics. With good mechanics, a pitcher will simultaneously acquire both faster speed and better control.

FDA is publishing regulations on bottled water that will promote honesty and fair dealing in the marketplace by providing standard definitions for the terms “artesian water,” “ground water,” “mineral water,” “purified water,” “sparkling bottled water,” “spring water,” “sterile water” and “well water.” They also bring mineral water under existing quality standards for
water filled in bottle.

Bottled water, like all other foods regulated by FDA, must be processed, packaged, shipped and stored in a safe and sanitary manner and be truthfully and accurately labeled. Bottled water products must also meet specific FDA quality standards for contaminants. These are set in response to requirements that the Environmental Protection Agency has established for tap water.

The new regulation sets standard definitions for different types of water filled in bottles, helping to resolve possible confusion about what terms like “spring” and “ground” water really mean.

For example, “spring water” is now defined as water collected as it flows naturally to the surface, or when pumped through a bore hole from the spring source. Water that comes from the bore hole must be the same as that which comes from the spring’s natural orifice. The regulation allows labeling to describe how the water came to the surface, for example, “naturally flowed to the surface, not extracted.”

The regulation also requires mineral water to meet the bottled water quality standards. It must come from a protected underground source and contain at least 250 parts per million in
total dissolved solids. Mineral water had previously been exempt from standards that apply to other bottled water.

Besides defining several terms, the regulation addresses various other labeling concerns. For example, water bottled from municipal water supplies must be clearly labeled as such, unless it is processed sufficiently to be labeled as “distilled” or “purified” water.

The regulation also requires accurate labeling of bottled waters marketed for infants. If a product is labeled “sterile” it must be processed to meet FDA’s requirements for commercial sterility. Otherwise, the labeling must indicate that it is not sterile and should be used in preparation of infant formula only as directed by a physician or according to infant formula preparation instructions.

Like all foods, beverages must also be safe and truthfully labeled. However, if the water ingredient is highlighted in any way, that water must meet water filled in bottle standards.

A proposal on this subject was published on Jan. 5, 1993. The comment period was extended twice — once to allow a trade group to conduct a survey on the meaning of “spring water” and later to allow comment on two surveys that were submitted to FDA.

FDA received more than 430 comments, most of which were supportive of the proposal.
The rule becomes effective six months after being published in the Federal Register.

I have made an informative list on choosing your beginning rod and reel. You won’t need expensive or complicated gear to catch a fish. Most people know that fishing tackle manufacturers turn out fishing tackle to catch the Fishermen’s eye instead of fish. The Rods and Reels I used to catch fish many years ago still catch fish today. In fact, it may even work better today seeing how the fish haven’t seen this particular offerings over and over again.

Gear to catch Fish shouldn’t be complex or overpriced. Simple set-ups work best for any fish. Back in my younger days, a Buddy and I went Bass fishing at a local lake. The weather was hot that day, even for June. We knocked off about lunchtime and was cleaning up the boat when this Old Man and 2 kids came into the boat launch area.

When they got out, they had a huge stringer of Black Bass. The biggest one was 6 and a half pounds and none were under 2 pounds. I walked over and asked the Old Man what they had used for bait, seeing how my Buddy and I were skunked that morning and we had been using the latest equipment and lures on the Market. The Old Man smiled and showed me his Minnow bucket and said “Just plain old minnows”! I also couldn’t keep from noticing their very basic graphite fishing rods and reels. Their simple set up had out produced the newest technology and presentations on the market at the time!

The basic fishing equipment you’ll want to begin catching Bass or any other fish is a Rod and Reel, line and bait. That’s all you need. You also don’t need to run to the overpriced specialty store to find this tackle, your local sporting goods store or Wal-Mart has an excellent selection. I’d suggest a Rod and Reel combo like the Zebco 33 and a matching rod. This should set you back about $25 or so.

Stay away from level wind reels to begin with. They’re hard to master and expensive. Although easier than a spincast reel to use, Spinning reels can be complex to use and if not used correctly, can leave you with a mess on your hands.

Now on your fishing tackle list comes the line. If you bought a rod and reel combo, chances are it came with line already on it. If not, or you want to change the line, then I’d suggest a 10lb line from either Stren or Trilene. Don’t fall for the marketing hype that you need expensive line. Trilene and Stren is good line and all that one needs.

Now we’re turn our attention to bait selection for the beginner. Start with live bait and work your way up to artificials. You’ll catch more fish and bigger ones on live bait. When you’re in the Fishing Dept. of your favorite store, look for Eagle Claw live bait hooks in the 1/0 to 3/0 sizes and get a few packs. Next try and find some weights. You can generally find the ones that come several sizes to a package. Split shot is a great weight for beginners. Next, check out the floats. I like to use the Balsa wood floats. I use the slip floats. These slide up and down the line for easy adjustment. They’re held in place at the top by a knot or bobber stop. You can now get out on your favorite body of water and start fishing!

That’s your basic list you’ll need to start fishing. This set up should cost you less than a $100 and once you have some experience under your belt, you’ll find it’s pretty easy to outfish the local Pro’s. The fishing companies have made it seem like catching a Bass is nearly impossible unless you’re using the latest and greatest gear on the Market. Nothing could be further from the truth. Catching fish is easy and doesn’t take a lot of sophisticated equipment!

By following the used four wheeler buying advice below, you can help ensure that you won’t be laying down your cold hard cash for someone elses problem.

The first thing you’ll want to do is check out the tires. You’re going to check to see if they’re worn. This could indicate tires that need replaced or an ATV that has been abused. Also, if the tread is worn down, you’ll looking at the purchase of four new atv tires!

Always take a friend with you when going to look at an used atv. Raise the ATV up if possible to check the underside. Make sure to look at all the shock points and check for any rust or damaged areas. This includes cracks in the frame. Look for signs of fresh paint.Fresh paint, mismatched paint, new parts or fresh welds can all indicate recent repairs.

When {buying|purchasing} a used 4×4 atv, check out the cv joint boots. If they are cracked, this can allow water to get inside. This will cause rust and lead to major damage, which leads to major repair cost!

Take a look at the oil level in the differentials. Chocolate colored oil, or milky looking oil, means water. This can indicate problems that you don’t want to mess with.

Don’t over look the sprockets (if equpped). This can indicate extreme use. The same is true if the sprockets have a hook appearance. Wear on sprockets can mean they need replaced, as may the chain.

Take the time to check the wheel bearings. You can do this by raising the machine and try to move the wheels back and forth. Do this on the front and back. Bad bearings will eventually lead to spindle damage. Bearings are known to go out when you’re furthest from the trail head.

Another area you’ll need to check is the tie rod ends. This is done by checking for excessive play in the handle bars when moving them.

If you don’t know what the air box is or where it’s located, get educated. This is one area you need to check out. To find the air box on most models, simply look beneath the seat. What you don’t want to see is a  bunch of dirt or water inside the air box. This is bad news.

Don’t forget to check for rust in the gas tank. You check for this by taking a flashlight and shining it into the tank. Rust in the gas tank isn’t good news. It means there was water in there at one time.

Check the electrical system by turning on the lights. You also should make sure any cigarrete lighter plug works. These are used for accessories.

Don’t forget the test ride. Beware of Sellers who will not let you ride the machine. Listen for any unusual noise. Note how it handles and be on the lookout for any loose parts.

The exhaust should have a spark arrestor. Many owners remove these. However, National Forest and other public trails require spark arrestor’s to be in place. Owners without them can be fined and prevented from riding in these places.

Another important thing you want to check is the age of the atv itself. You may be able to pick up older atv’s inexpensively, but many times you’ll have difficulty in locating used atv parts for these older machines. If you can try to stick with atv’s that are only a few years old.

By following these used atv buying tips and you’ll increase your chances of purchasing a quality used atv that will give you many years of service. They’re not hard to follow.
