What About Motor Oil Additives?
Should you pour after market additives into your motor oil? You could be risking the health of your engine if you do! Remember Slick 50?
Slick 50, and companies of the like are synonymous with FTC complaints and lawsuits! FTC went up against Slick 50, investigating their claims to deliver reduced engine wear to their customers as well as superior engine performance, and Slick 50 lost big time, costing them millions!
For fun just search the manufacturer or name of an oil additive your are considering over at www.ftc.gov/ (you might be surprised).
If you have access to an engine shop with a dyno, then you’re in luck because you’d easily be able to prove that your aftermarket oil additive is really and truly making a difference to your engine’s performance.
Because performance improvements are hard to demonstrate it is easy for these fly by night companies to pop up with the next new miracle additive that will give you 37% more power with engine protection that lasts forever. B.S.
If you purchase a quality oil to begin with, then it already contains everything you’d need, want and expect, so ultimately, additives are a waste of money. Developing and manufacturing a quality motor oil has proven to be no simple feat, and in fact an excellent motor oil is a true accomplishment. Adding each additive to the mix comes with a cost and a benefit.
What this means is you can’t just dump some aftermarket additive into your oil and expect a benefit.. As a matter of fact, I’d put money on the chances of your engine oil’s effectiveness actually decreasing! Not a good idea.
The only thing you need to do is select a quality oil and change your oil as recommended either by your car manufacturer or your oil manufacturer. I get it, it’s easy to recommend using good oil but not easy to know who’s really making it and who’s claiming to make it. Make a careful choice from best synthetic motor oils.
