Direct TV an Alternative to Cable TV

By    |  December 8, 2009

We have been itching to get rid of Comcast digital cable for a long time. The issue is they give you a great combo with their bundles that include telepone, internet, and TV service. When you want to disconnect one, you lose the discounts of the package.

But the cable television setup just has to go, as the service and quality is well below par. There is so much talk these days about HD, there isn’t much of that with Charter cable television. So I began doing a little research on who else was providing service in my area.

I happen to be one of the folks who have a few choices. Unlike many people who can only pick from just the cable company or Direct TV satellite service, I have a third choice in this area. The old telephone company in my neighborhood has been enhancing the telephone network. So there is an additional player with AT&T and their U-Verse service.

That doesn’t of course mean I won’t have the same issues. It could put someone in the same boat as with the cable television company, because phone guys want customers to package their television service with high speed and voice service. If the deal works out well, I’ll be happy. Then again if the service is poor you are in the same circumstance that we all hate, being stuck with cable TV that isn’t all that great.  So I’m doing a side by side comparison, cable vs Direct TV so I make the right decision.

Some reviews I found on the internet are fairly good on telecom TV service. Because it is brand new, there is sometimes a learning curve with a new technology like this, and some clients share their bad reviews. Those reviews are the quite amusing, because people make the decision to write a dissertation on their poor experience and post it on the world wide web. Unhappy customers rail on the company like it is some giant conspiracy to make the customer unhappy, like the company does not want our money!

Another option I am looking into is of course satellite TV. Since we have four TV watchers in our home, we usually buy a high end TV package. The satellite TV choices seem to be pretty comparable, as the DirecTV Premier package and the America’s Everything Pak by Dish Network are each about $100 per month. Sure that’s fairly high for cable television, but if you make the comparison with treating your family to dinner and a trip to the movies, the entertainment value is comparable. Some in my family speak Spanish, so the Direct TV Mas package looks pretty good. The nice thing is that there are plenty of Direct TV opinions to help me decide which direction to take.
